What is longevity medicine?

Longevity medicine is advanced personalised preventive medicine - increasing healthspan and lifespan. It is a novel approach to medicine, rather than wait for symptoms of chronic diseases to appear to see a doctor, consultations with your longevity medicine specialist will help you live a healthier, longer life and prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases such as heart disease & stroke, diabetes & other metabolic diseases, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Conventional medical professionals focus on treating patients after a symptom or illness has developed. Chronic diseases are decades in the making. When a chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer or Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, changes causing that disease have been happening slowly over the previous 10-20 years and doctors and patients have missed an opportunity to prevent ill health. Heart disease is a good example. Build up of plaque in arteries all over your body start in people at a young age of 20-30 years old and only become apparent as a symptom sometimes 20 or more years later when the plaque causes critical narrowing or complete blocking of an artery. In up to 50% of people the first presentation of heart disease can be fatal. In colorectal cancer tumours develop from polyps which can be detected and treated at an early stage with screening tests. When a patient is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, changes in the brain have been happening slowly for up to 20 years. In all these cases lifestyle intervention plans including exercise, diet, sleep advice as well as prescription medications when appropriate can help to delay, prevent or treat these diseases before they cause symptoms.

At longevitydoctor we practice preventative medicine to increase lifespan (how long you live) and healthspan (how well you live free of chronic disease) by preventing or delaying the chronic diseases .
